About the Role
We are seeking an Allied Health Assistant to join our dietetic team. In this role, you will have a busy and varied schedule, providing care to patients in person and over the telephone under the direction of a dietitian. You will also handle administrative tasks to support our dietitians, including managing our inventory, feeding supplies and other resources, as well as other day-to-day activities.
This role does not require a clinical background or training, as all necessary support will be provided for you to practice safely under the direct guidance of a dietitian.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide direct patient care under the delegation and direction of registered dietitians
- Undertake clinical administrative and other tasks to support the functioning of the service

About the Team/Service
Our dietetic team includes approximately 30 dietitians and two dietitian assistants working across acute, community, outpatient and renal services. Our Waikato dietetic service covers a large geographical area; we provide care at Waikato Hospital, a large tertiary teaching hospital, as well in our smaller rural hospitals: Tokoroa, Taumarunui, Te Kuiti and Thames Hospitals.

Allied Health is a department that provides Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Dietetic, Audiology & New Born Hearing screening, Social Work, and Psychology services. Staff within these professions are all involved in direct client care and work in a wide range of situations to improve the health and wellbeing of the people they work with. Allied Health staff work in partnership with individuals and their family/whānau to facilitate relationships and a smooth journey through the healthcare system.
About you
The ideal candidate will be highly adaptable, able to follow established processes, and assist in creating new ones. They would have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, allowing them to speak confidently to both patients, their whānau and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Empathy and the ability to work independently are also essential.
Additionally, the candidate should possess excellent teamwork and problem-solving skills. They will need to collaborate effectively with other health professionals, contributing to a supportive and cohesive work environment. The ability to think critically and creatively to address challenges and improve processes and patient outcomes is crucial.
Qualifications, Essential skills and Attributes
- Minimum of NCEA level 2 or similar
- An excellent ability to prioritise varied and competing tasks
- Experience working with people/consumers
- Demonstrated ability for confidentiality
- Competent computer skills
- Current full New Zealand Driver’s license
- Excellent communication skills
Desired:
- New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (level3) (Health Assistance), orequivalent
- Recognised qualification in nutrition
- Working knowledge of Tikanga Maori.
- Experience working as an Allied Health Assistant
