Te Whatu Ora Waitematā provides healthcare to the northern and western regions of Auckland, and is the largest "district health board" in New Zealand by population. Our primary site is North Shore Hospital, in the beautiful seaside suburb of Takapuna, less than 10km from the city centre. We are a major metropolitan teaching hospital and an ANZCA-credentialled anaesthesia department, with 28 operating rooms over two campuses. In addition to our clinical, academic, and teaching credentials, our department is known for its welcoming and inclusive culture.

About the role:

We provide anaesthesia services for a broad range of surgical specialties including colorectal, upper GI, liver resections, breast, complex endocrine, bariatric, adult and paediatric ENT, urology, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatric dental, robotic surgery, and orthopaedic procedures.

We are seeking suitable candidates for our Anaesthesia Fellow posts for 12 months, commencing either the first week of February 2026 or August 2026. Roles may be split into 6 months each. Expressions of interest for February/August 2027 are welcome. We offer the following fellowships:

  • Upper GI Anaesthesia (available Feb 2026)
  • Pain Medicine (available Feb 2026)
  • Obstetric Anaesthesia (available Feb 2027)
  • Perioperative Medicine (available Feb 2026)
  • Medical Education in Anaesthesia (available Aug 2026)
  • Research in Anaesthesia (available Feb 2026)
  • General - with self-directed subspecialty interest areas (available Feb 2026)

Our General fellowship can accommodate a range of interest areas, including Robotic Surgery, Sustainability in Anaesthesia, Healthcare Informatics, or a self-directed clinical subspecialty.

The roles are designed to give fellows focused experience in a specific sub-specialty, within a broader general clinical experience. Fellows have supervised lists in their sub-specialty, as well as independent lists. They have experience 'running the floor' with support, including triaging emergency cases and overseeing anaesthesia trainees. A portfolio project forms part of each role, and dedicated time is rostered to support this. We provide a broad range of clinical and non-clinical opportunities, and the support and expertise to make the most of them. Fellows develop both clinically and professionally, towards confident independent practice.

About the
team:

Our fellows work 4 weekdays, with one weekday as a 'rostered day off'. Within their 4 days, they have a half-day of rostered admin time towards non-clinical responsibilities. In addition, they share evenings, weekends and public holiday shifts between those on the fellow roster. There are no routine night shifts. The contract includes 6 weeks annual leave and 2 weeks education leave (pro rata), and a generous stipend towards continuing professional development expenses.
