Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Do you want to shape the future of the tax system?

Do you want to use your skills to do real-world economic analysis of significant policy issues?

Do you want to play a role in influencing the Minister of Finance on how the tax system can strategically respond to new challenges facing New Zealand?

Do you want to understand how the Government raises money, and how this impacts all areas of public policy?

Do you want to be part of an awesome team which works collaboratively with Inland Revenue on critical issues?

Mō mātou | About Us

At The Treasury Te Tai Ōhanga we're creating a better future for New Zealand and everyone who calls our amazing country home. We're the Government's economic and financial advisor, working hard to raise the standard of living for everyone in Aotearoa, now and in the future.

Our talented people bring their diverse backgrounds and experiences to tackling New Zealand's biggest and most inter-connected issues. Every day, they are influencing, advising, and supporting Ministers, Crown CEOs and Government decision-makers to shape our country's collective tomorrow.

The tax system touches all areas of the economy and people's lives, so robust analysis of tax policy is crucial for achieving the Treasury's vision. The Tax Strategy team is an economic performance team that works with Inland Revenue to advise Ministers on significant tax policy issues. We focus on the big-picture, strategic economic issues in the tax system: economic growth and fiscal sustainability; the role of the tax system in delivering the government's wider living standards objectives; and delivering on key Ministerial priorities such as the integrity of the tax system.

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role

We're currently looking for an analyst to join our team. You'll join a supportive and experienced team gearing up to advise Ministers on high profile issues. Our team leads on a range of issues and the work programme is flexible, and so your work would depend on your skills and interests as well as business needs at the time. But we expect that it would cover a mix of:

  • Working with Inland Revenue to advise Ministers on priorities for the tax policy work programme and then deliver priority elements of that programme,
  • Engaging with a range of stakeholders in the public, private and NGO sectors,
  • Playing a key role in work to improve Treasury's analysis and advice on significant current and future tax policy issues, so that we are prepared to advise Ministers on the big issues of the day.

An Analyst role would suit someone who has recently completed a graduate programme in the public sector, or with analyst-level experience in the public or private sector.
