About the Role
We have a permanent, full-time opportunity available to join our Hauora Māori Tūmatanui team in a Aporei Prevention role. This role is critical in enabling the delivery of the NPHS strategic agenda for Pae Ora (Healthy Futures).
The primary purpose of the role is to contribute to the Prevention Directorate wharepuni in Immunisations and Screening to advance the Hauora Māori Tūmatanui work programme within the Prevention Directorates and support a strong partnership for the benefit of kaimahi Māori in the Prevention Directorates.
In addition, this role leads and supports other teams in Prevention to deliver complex or contentious pieces of work, with a particular focus on improving public health outcomes for Māori in immunisations and screening and building partnerships with agencies outside of the health sector that have an influence over the wider determinants of health as they relate to the aspirations of iwi and Māori communities.

The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.
About you
You will be dedicated to shaping the future of Māori public health through providing a proactive approach to operational policy development, providing expert technical advice in a variety of formats, tailored to diverse audience to inform and enhance decision-making. Committed to the development of Māori prevention initiatives in immunisations and screening you will be experienced playing a leading role in the development of Tiriti-led advice and bring strong subject matter expertise and relationship skills capable of leading a portfolio of work. - A relevant post graduate qualification in public health or mātauranga Māori, or equivalent experience. Needs to draw on extensive experience in varied environments, stretching over 10-15 years
- Experience in applying critical thinking and using sound judgement to develop options and provide advice, particularly in leading complex or contentious policy work
- Leadership experience, including designing and managing a portfolio of work, and resources
- A preference for experience in working across multi-disciplinary teams
- Previous experience in applying critical thinking, using sound judgment to develop options and knowledge of the machinery of government, and policy development, is preferable
- Understanding of kawa and tikanga and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi & significant experience working in partnership with iwi & Māori communities
