Support the Day-to-Day Work That Keeps Aotearoa's Archives Accessible

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha o ngā hau e whā, nau mai, haere mai.
Greetings to the many authorities, voices, and experts of the world.

This is a great opportunity to contribute to the preservation and access of New Zealand's public record. As an Assistant Archivist, you'll be part of a team providing essential services at the frontline of Archives New Zealand's operations.

The work is varied and practical. You'll be involved in supporting reading room and research services, contributing to digitisation, shelving and transferring records, assisting with remote enquiries, and contributing to administrative processes.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone with strong attention to detail, good communication skills, and a willingness to learn and support others. Ideally, you'll bring:

  • Previous experience in an archives, records or library environment
  • Confidence with digital tools and learning to use new technologies
  • Experience handling public enquiries or working in a service role
  • An understanding of repositories or warehouse environments, and comfort performing physical tasks such as lifting, shelving and working at height
  • A team-oriented approach and flexibility to support different parts of the regional operation
  • Past experience in digitising archives or other heritage collections would be beneficial
  • A strong understanding of the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a willingness to support access to taonga and Mātauranga Māori

If you have experience working with physical and digital collections and are motivated by contributing to the care and accessibility of public records, this role could be an excellent fit.

About us

As part of the Department of Internal Affairs, we are the kaitiaki of Aotearoa's documentary heritage. At Archives New Zealand and the National Library, we care for the records, stories, and knowledge that shape who we are as a nation. We collect, protect, and share everything from government records to treasured taonga, working with communities, libraries, and archives across the motu and beyond to make sure the history and information that matter remain accessible for generations to come.
