The New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa, protects and promotes New Zealand through world class border management.  We promote New Zealand's international trade, collect Crown revenue, and enforce the law by identifying and seizing prohibited imports and exports.  We also make sure that lawful travellers and items can move across our border as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

About this role| Mō tēnei tūranga mahi

We are looking for an Assistant Customs Officer to join our Northern Ports Inspections team based at our Air Cargo Inspection Facility (ACIF).

This role undertakes a range of important functions including:

  • Providing assistance to internal and external stakeholders, including freight companies and responding to public enquiries.
  • Working closely with Customs Officers to ensure importers and exporters are meeting border requirements and which can involve report writing, conducting quality control checks and forklift operation.
  • Basic maintenance of our fleet vehicles, forklifts, ordering of our essential PPE stock and other necessary items.

This is an onsite, full-time role working Monday - Friday and we are open to discussing flexibility around start and finish times within our 7am - 7pm operating hours.

As an Assistant Customs Officer your base salary will be $53,832 per annum.  We'll also provide you with a full uniform including work boots and free onsite parking.

 We are looking for someone who:

  • Has high levels of integrity, honesty and discretion.
  • Brings great communication skills to effectively interact with a wide range of people.
  • Is computer savvy across common software applications and can pick up new systems with ease.
  • Is motivated, reliable and can work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Has a good level of physical fitness.
  • Holds a Class 2 drivers licence (or higher) or has the ability to obtain Class 2 while employed at Customs (required to drive the forklift). 

 

Working at Customs | Mahi ki te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa

To work for the New Zealand Customs Service, you must meet all the following requirements:

  • Be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident.
  • Residing in New Zealand at the time of application.
  • Have resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years*.
  • Hold a full NZ Drivers licence.
  • Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment, drug test and a clear Police record. 

 

*If you are a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years but have been absent from New Zealand for periods of 6-9 months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA then you will be required to provide overseas Police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
