About the role
This position is ideal for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with interest and experience in working with older adults. Our clients include people with dementia presenting with significant behavioural and psychological symptoms along with older adults who experience late onset, moderate to severe mental health symptoms or chronic mental illness accompanied by physical frailty.
You will have the opportunity to complete service improvement initiatives and support the growth of medical and other health professionals through teaching and mentoring.
Peer review, informal supervision and collegial support are provided. You will work alongside two other Psychiatrists and an experienced team of senior nursing and allied health colleagues using a case-management model. Services are provided on an outpatient and community basis with referral to specialist inpatient wards when required.
While this permanent position is part time 0.6 FTE, there are opportunities within the wider mental health service to work increased hours. After hours on-call not required unless desired.
About the Team/Service/ Location
You will be joining a cohesive and experienced specialist team who are passionate about improving health outcomes and promoting quality of life for older adults and their families. The Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH) service multidisciplinary team includes Psychiatrists with a specialty in older age, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Community Psychiatric Nurses and a Nurse Practitioner.
The OPMH service see clients primarily in the community or in outpatient settings as required. The Consultant Psychiatrists in the team also admit to a small number of inpatient Psychogeriatric beds within an Older Persons and Rehabilitation ward and provide consult services to acute physical health wards at Hutt Hospital. We work closely with geriatric medicine and other mental health services across the district.
Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals - Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua - as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.
About you
- Vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
- FRANZCP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
- Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
- Relevant experience and training
