The New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa manages NZ's Secure Exports Scheme (SES). This internationally recognised program is designed to make business easier by helping NZ's exporters clear customs both here and overseas. Our nationwide SES team work directly with exporters and are focused on building a secure supply chain that meets global customs standards.

 

About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi 

As a Customs Officer within the SES team, you will assist in the promotion and success of the SES programme.

You will do this by providing advice and education to exporters, highlighting the benefits and key requirements of the programme and you will support the application process for new businesses. You will become an expert in understanding how goods need to be packed, stored, and transported according to secure supply chain expectations.

You will also provide assistance in overcoming any barriers to trade that are within the Customs mandate.

You will work within a national team with officers located in major ports of New Zealand and support each other to make SES a success.

This is a great opportunity for you to continually build, engage and maintain relationships with industry, other government agencies, and other key stakeholders.

Based at our Dunedin Customhouse, this position will work standard business hours between Monday and Friday. Planned travel within and outside of the region is required.

As Customs Officer your base salary will be $58,718 per annum.  We'll also provide you with a full uniform including work boots.

 

About you | Ko wai koe

To be successful in this role you will need to be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Keen interest and understanding of supply chain frameworks and NZ's exports industry.
  • Experience in building and enhancing successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills, including the ability to identify and analyse problems, manage and/or mitigate risks and implement innovative solutions.
  • Ability and confidence to work both collaboratively and autonomously. 
  • Strong computer/technology skills.
  • Good level of fitness and physical ability so you can complete the full range of duties in the role.
  • Knowledge of Customs export trade environment would be an advantage, but not a requirement as full training will be provided.

 

Working at Customs | Mahi ki te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa

To work for the New Zealand Customs Service, you must meet all the following requirements:

  • Be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident.
  • Residing in New Zealand at the time of application.
  • Have resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years*.
  • Hold a full NZ Drivers licence.
  • Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment, drug test and have a clear Police record. 

*If you are a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years but have been absent from New Zealand for periods of 6-9 months within the past five years (preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA) then you will be required to provide overseas Police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
