Mō te tūnga | About the role

We are looking for a Sustainability Director as a senior leader in the Defence Strategy Management team. This role integrates across other NZDF units, partners and external agencies, and is responsible for implementing and overseeing the NZDF Sustainability Framework, supporting our organisation to minimise risk and enhance impact.

This role will is responsible for:

  • Championing sustainability and implementing the NZDF sustainability framework.
  • Establishing and collaborating on strategic and tactical projects, including governance, strategy, military, environmental, social, etc.
  • Leading matrix teams across the NZDF to progress initiatives.

This fixed term opportunity covering extended leave ends in March 2026, and is a unique opportunity to embed your sustainability expertise in an organisational, military and security setting.

This role is based in Auckland or Wellington.

This role will appeal if you have a background in, and are passionate about, sustainability, systems-thinking and advantageous within Defence.

We are looking for a sustainability expert who:

  • Can effectively engage and negotiate on sensitive and complex topics.
  • Enjoys complex problem solving and can translate insights simply.
  • Is confident engaging with senior management and governance.
  • Holds a degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. sustainability, environmental, science, psychology, etc.

To be eligible for the required level of government security clearance with the NZ Defence Force, you need to meet certain citizenship and residency criteria. Here's what you need to know:

Higher Level Security Clearance

  • You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
  • At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last ten (10) years.
  • You must have a ten (10) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
