Director, Strategic Technology Enhancement Programme

  • 12-month fixed term

Whakatairangatia ngā kete o te mātauranga ki te ao mārama! E te tai whakarunga, e te tai whakararo – nau piki mai, nau kake mai ki te Mana Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa.

May the baskets of knowledge (education) be brought into the world of light. We welcome one and all to join us at the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About the role

We are looking for a dynamic, hands-on and results-driven leader to oversee and lead our Programme Delivery Office (PDO) and the Strategic Technology Enhancement Programme (STEP) teams. The Director of STEP and PDO will lead the delivery of STEP workstreams, ensuring their integration into NZQA operations. This leadership role drives strategic direction, fosters cross-organisational and cross-sector collaboration, and manages programme delivery, change, stakeholder engagement, and technical support.

As the Director of STEP and PDO you will have a real opportunity to lead impactful projects that shape the future of NZQA as an organisation.

This is not the same old routine Programme Director role – this is a dynamic, challenging and hands-on role, where you are not just sitting behind your desk firing emails and completing reports, but you also are in trenches with the troops and helping troubleshoot issues one day and then presenting to SLT and Board the next day. This requires an ‘agile' and ‘active' Programme Director who is constantly on the move to where they are most required.

Ko tāu nā i tēnei tūranga | What you'll bring to the role:

  • Proven experience in strategic leadership and the successful implementation of large complex programmes.
  • Experience and comfort in leading Agile and Prince2 project delivery.
  • An active leadership style with proven experience in managing project staff and leading programme teams.
  • Ability to provide strategic advice and solutions to complex problems.
  • Expert knowledge of project and change management methodologies, techniques and
    processes
  • Excellent interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organisation. This is not the usual mindless requirement that gets added to all roles. We mean this! This role needs to prioritise stakeholder relationships, stakeholder engagement and ensuring all perspectives are heard prior to making decisions. This project needs to bring everyone along the journey, and we really mean it.
  • Calm under pressure and can always see a way out of issues with a glass half-full mindset
