Mō te tūnga | About the role
We are looking for a skilled and knowledgeable electronics engineer to join our team and provide essential engineering support to the NZ Army and Joint Force operations. This is an exciting opportunity to develop, document and integrate communication systems and provide innovative design solutions for electronics.
You will be the sole electronics engineer in a team of passionate engineers working to provide comprehensive yet agile engineering design to a modern forward focused Land Army. Design utilises the full gambit of formative engineering processes and also emerging and disruptive technologies to achieve all round engineering success.
You will:
- Advise on engineering projects to solve complex technical problems related to electronics, communication and radio systems.
- Design and develop new solutions from the ground up, using first principles of engineering.
- Work with team members on the creation of prototypes, testing and evaluating them to ensure they meet the required specifications.
- Use advanced software tools for designing electronic systems, creating 3D models, and running simulations to verify your designs.
- Document all design work, including detailed engineering drawings and technical reports, to ensure everything is clear and well-understood by the wider team.
This role is based in Trentham Military Camp. There is free parking available on-site. You will need to work primarily in the office. Flexible working options are negotiable.

You will be a passionate electronics engineer that enjoys being hands on and getting involved in the practical application of your designs. You will be able to engage effectively with stakeholders to understand their requirements. You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical information to non-technical audiences.
You will have:
- Good electrical and electronic engineering analytical and design skills.
- Sound knowledge of electrical and electronic manufacturing processes.
- Proven experience in engineering development.
- Knowledge of design control processes.
- Proven experience in the design and development of electronic engineering solutions.
- An understanding of engineering legislation/standards/specifications.
- A Diploma in Engineering (Electronics). A Bachelor Degree is advantageous.
This role requires occasional domestic travel across NZDF's Camps and Bases. There is the potential for international travel to attend training.

Higher Level Security Clearance
- You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
- At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last ten (10) years.
- You must have a ten (10) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
