Job Description

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

  • Twelve-month fixed term opportunity, flexible location
  • The knowledge that your technical expertise is helping to protect some of the world's most unique species and places
  • Are You the Missing Link in Our Digital Ecosystem?

Our vision: Nature is thriving in Aotearoa | Te Oranga o te Ao Tūroa

The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and restore nature across Aotearoa. When nature thrives, we all thrive.

He angitūtanga | About the role

We're looking for an Enterprise Integrations Engineer who can speak both "tech" and "human" fluently. Someone who gets as excited about a well-designed API as our ecologists do about finding a rare native orchid.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Designing, implementing, and maintaining integration solutions between our various enterprise systems
  • Acting as the digital version of a wildlife corridor – ensuring data can migrate safely between applications
  • Diagnosing integration issues with the same patience our field staff use when waiting for a kākāpō to appear
  • Collaborating with stakeholders across the department to understand their natural requirements
  • Future-proofing our integration architecture (because conservation is all about thinking long-term)

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

This role calls for someone who is keen to add value to the work we do and be part of a high performing team.

If you have some of the following, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Experience with enterprise integration patterns and technologies
  • Proven ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities (the digital equivalent of tracking a predator through dense bush)
  • Knowledge of API design and middleware technologies (REST, SOAP, GraphQL)
  • Excellent communication skills – you'll need to explain complex technical concepts to people who spend more time with penguins than with computers
  • Azure Integration Services (Azure Service Bus, Logic Apps, Functions, Event Grid)
  • ETL (Extract Transform Load using tools like FME) / ELT (Extract Load Transform using tools like DBT)
  • identify emerging technologies, evaluating the potential impact, and drive innovation to maintain leading-edge service.

Desirable:

  • Experience with conservation or public sector work
  • Understanding of New Zealand's unique IT ecosystem
  • A passion for the outdoors (you'll be digitally supporting those who protect it)

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What's in it for you?

DOC places importance on developing a culture where everyone can participate, thrive, and grow.  We're working towards being an organisation that is diverse, equitable and inclusive by default.  You can learn more about what we offer here.
