Mō te tūnga | About the role
You will be performing financial tasks, such as calculating veteran entitlements, providing data analysis, maintaining reporting and other business processes to meet business requirements for the Veterans' Affairs New Zealand. This is a busy and varied role within a small and collaborative team who support other Veterans' Affairs teams, the wider NZDF, NZ Veterans and their families.
A typical day might include:
- Providing advice on financial matter, veteran' entitlements advice and reporting to the Senior Management and other VA teams.
- Monitoring, analysing and forecasting financial results.
- Providing financial services, such as tax calculation and the filing of PAYE for veterans, fixed asset management, audit engagements.
- Working on regular plans, reports and other documents required as part of the NZDF planning cycle.
- Investigating financial anomalies and working closely with other teams on issues that arise.
- Provide effective support to the Head of Veterans' Affairs and wider team with other tasks as needed.

Along with having excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to positively engage and advise stakeholders across all levels of the organisation and wider public, you will be skilled at building trust and confidence at a senior level.
This role requires excellent communication skills with the ability to write clearly and concisely for a wide range of audience, as well as managing multiple responsibilities and tasks simultaneously within this busy environment.
Ideally, you will also have:
- Experience within an accounting or finance role, preferably within a large or complex organisation.
- Good working knowledge of relevant standards, policies, regulations and NZ Public Sector financial management practices.
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload efficiently.
- Good working knowledge of SAP or similar finance management systems.
- High level of computer literacy with an office productivity suite (such as MS Office) with a minimum of Intermediate level expertise in Microsoft Excel, as well as the ability to learn new systems.
This position is fixed term ending 30 June 2026 and is based at the Reserve Bank building in Wellington CBD. Once you are up to speed in the role then flexible working arrangements can be discussed.

To be eligible for the required level of government security clearance with the NZ Defence Force, you need to meet certain citizenship and residency criteria. Here's what you need to know:
Low Level Security Clearance
- You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
- At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last five (5) years.
- You must have a five (5) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
