About the Role

The Payroll kapa (team) is a fundamental part of the HR Shared Services (HRSS) whānau (family).  They tautoko (support) the largest workforce in the South Island ensuring we pay our kaimahi (staff) accurately, on time, every time. They're hard-working and dedicated delivering their mahi (work) to high standards putting the kaimahi (staff) at the centre of what they do.

We are seeking a motivated Payroll Officer to join our Processing Team within our Payroll Department. This is a busy role where you will be responsible for development and delivery of excellent customer service experience, make timely and accurate payments to kaimahi (staff) of Te Tai o Poutini (West Coast) and Waitaha (Canterbury), maintaining employee records and work closely with the HRSS kapa (team).

We are looking for someone to step into a fixed-term role until approximately January 2026. 

You will be responsible for:

  • Setting up employee's tax code changes, Kiwisaver, union deductions etc
  • Calculating back payments, overpayments, parental leave payments, cash ups as per the Holidays Act and or different MECA
  • Process and maintain time and attendance data
  • Interpretation and extension of bulk timesheets, exception sheets, leave forms and other documents as required in accordance with employment agreements and the Holidays Act
  • Coding of daily dated data and filing of payroll documents.

About you

To be successful in this role, you should be comfortable in a complex, diverse and fast-paced work environment.  We need someone who's resilient, driven, works well under pressure and is unphased by delivering to deadlines while achieving a high level of accuracy.  This role would suit an energetic problem solver with a keen eye for detail who can adapt their style and focus when the need arises.  Drive and determination to deliver excellent customer service is a must.

Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent communication skills and customer service experience.
  • Accurate numeracy and keyboard skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Sound organisational and time management skills to meet tight deadlines.
  • Payroll background or transferable skills.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Suite applications and proficient user of Microsoft Excel.
