Join Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is transforming the way healthcare is delivered by empowering regional decision-making and moving away from a centralised model. With an $27bn annual budget, a $16bn asset base, and 85,000 dedicated staff, we aim to deliver high-quality, accessible care to all New Zealanders. Health NZ is split into four regions: Northern, covering the north of the North Island, Te Manawa Taki, covering Waikato and the midland districts, Central | Ikaroa, covering the lower North Island and Te Waipounamu, covering the South Island.

Our Northern region, the largest and most diverse, serves nearly two million people across urban and rural communities. It includes four districts: Te Tai Tokerau Northland, Waitemata, Te Toka Tumai Auckland, and Counties Manukau.

We're seeking a motivated and experienced senior financial manager to drive district financial performance - key to restoring financial sustainability and improving health outcomes. You'll be part of a significant system change, working to ensure resources are used efficiently to deliver better care, reduce waiting times, and support equity across communities.

Make a meaningful impact on the future of public healthcare in Aotearoa.

About the Role

The GM Finance will lead the District Finance team, providing strategic financial management and expert advice to the Group Director Operations (GDO). In this key role, you will drive financial performance, mitigate risk, and support informed operational decision-making to ensure the district operates within budget.

You will oversee core finance functions, including monthly reporting, cash flow management, and the coordination of regional budgets and forecasts - ensuring all deliverables are completed accurately and on time.

This is a location-specific role, based alongside the GDO to support close collaboration and effective leadership.

About you

You'll bring 10 - 15 years of proven experience in senior financial management roles, along with a deep understanding of financial principles and practices. You have a strong track record as a senior financial manager in a leadership capacity, successfully overseeing financial operations and delivering results. Previous health sector experience is an advantage.

Your technical expertise spans accounting and finance, with a solid grasp of financial regulations and compliance requirements. You also bring specialist knowledge in cost accounting and performance analytics, giving you the insight to support informed decision-making and effective strategic planning.

As a Chartered Accountant (or equivalent), you combine professional credibility with a practical, solutions-focused approach - ensuring both the big picture and the finer details are taken care of.
