This is a major New Zealand-based forestry and manufacturing operation with an end-to-end supply chain spanning plantation management, sawmilling, and pulp production.
  
With a workforce of several hundred employees and a significant contractor base, it services domestic needs while exporting to multiple international markets.

About the Role
In this senior position, you will take ownership of shaping and delivering a company-wide health and safety strategy across a diverse portfolio of sites, including a designated Major Hazard Facility.

Acting as a key adviser to the Executive Team, you will influence cultural change, strengthen risk management, and embed compliance and engagement at every level.

Leading a skilled health and safety team, you will ensure systems meet all legal, ethical, and operational requirements, driving continuous improvement and aligning outcomes with the organisation’s long-term strategic goals.

What You’ll Be Doing

We’re seeking a Head of Health and Safety to deliver transformative initiatives in a complex, high-risk industrial environment. This rare opportunity blends strategic influence with hands-on engagement, ideal for a leader who can operate with equal strength in the boardroom and on site.
  • Lead the development and execution of the Health and Safety Strategy and Annual Plans
  • Maintain and evolve a fit-for-purpose Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Drive a proactive safety culture through worker engagement and leadership coaching
  • Provide expert advice to senior leaders and ensure legislative compliance
  • Oversee audits, investigations, emergency management and contractor systems
  • Manage performance indicators and risk controls in a complex, high-consequence environment  
What We’re Looking For
  • A senior Health and Safety leader with a minimum of 7 years in safety-sensitive industries (manufacturing, heavy industry, etc.)
  • A strategic thinker who can navigate executive-level planning while staying grounded in frontline realities
  • Strong working knowledge of NZ Health and Safety legislation, including experience with ACC AEP and Major Hazard Facility operations (highly preferred)
  • Proven ability to influence, lead cultural change and engage stakeholders across all levels
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Health and Safety, with additional certifications in auditing and investigation
