This is a permanent opportunity working full time for the seasonal period October to April/ May each year. Our seasonal Rangers will join a high performing operations team managing our Hut network across the Rakiura – Stewart Island location.
Our Hut Warden/Rangers work rostered hours full time over our busy summer season. Daily hours of work can vary so please review the applicant information to understand the commitment for the role. Each hut has fully equipped staff quarters which include shower, toilet, lighting, and gas facilities.
The day-to-day operations of all our huts are very similar however some huts require specific focus areas or additional skills. Day to day the role will include:
- Cleaning hut, facilities, and amenities daily
- Upgrading of tracks, structures, amenity areas and signs where required
- Management and knowledge of water, sewage, and solar systems
- Visitor engagement and sharing conservation knowledge through evening conservation talks, daily conservation nature walk/AND talkING to guests
- Effective leadership decision making skills during emergency situations
- Visitor Safety – Flooding and helicopter ground control
- Weed control
- Carry out compliance and law enforcement work as required
- Ensuring fee compliance
- Provide information to Park users

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:
- An understanding and appreciation of conservation values in New Zealand and an ability to communicate these to a wide range of people
- Experience in challenging and snow conditions
- That ‘willing to go the extra mile', ‘can do' attitude
- The practical know-how to make something out of nothing
- Backcountry tramping experience
- Good knowledge of Fiordland and the Southland/Otago Region
- A team player attitude who works well under pressure
- A current First Aid Certificate and valid Driver's License
This position works to a roster system and applicants must be available to complete the full period of employment from varying dates starting in October to April/ May of the next year.

The salary range for this position is $58,816 to $66,578 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
