Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
We have an opportunity for an experienced Investigator to join the Safer Commercial Transport team. In this role you'll lead moderate to complex investigations at a local level into areas where non-compliance and safety issues may be occurring in the commercial transport sector.
You'll use a range of tools to ensure that transport service licence holders are operating safely, holding people and organizations to account where they are not doing so. You will exercise statutory interventions and other regulatory activities as necessary. Responsibilities include:
- Planning, co-ordinating, reviewing and carrying out investigations in accordance with organisational requirements, including collection and custody of evidence, and expert/witness management
- Liaising and working closely with Police (Commercial Vehicle Safety Team) WorkSafe and other regulatory agencies as required
- Preparing and peer reviewing investigation reports as required
- Responding to incident/accident notifications
This role will involve some travel across the Auckland and Upper North Island, You must have a full driver licence, with no convictions.

We are seeking to appoint at a salary between $91,328 to $111,622 commensurate to skills and experience.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Experience in modern investigative techniques, interviewing and auditing
- Experience in supporting a team through the investigation process
- A meticulous approach to the collection and custody of evidence
- Proven success in building case that is prosecution ready and stands up against judicial scrutiny
- Experience managing risk, sensitive issues, and confidentiality in a regulatory enforcement environment would be ideal
- Ability to analyse data to identify areas of likely non-compliance
- Experience in writing well-reasoned, articulate reports that reach an objective conclusion
- Ability to understand and apply legislation, policy and other technical information and apply it in an operational context
- Transport sector experience would be advantageous, but is not essential
- You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.
Qualifications:
- Relevant or comparable experience as an investigator
- Trained and confident in using the P.E.A.C.E Model (preferred)
- Regulatory Compliance core knowledge qualification (desirable but not essential)

The Safer Commercial Transport team is responsible for regulating commercial transport operators: from heavy vehicles to small passenger services. We do this by monitoring our sector through audits, reviews and investigations and working with industry to drive best practice. The team regulates transport operators that have been licensed to operate as a transport service.
