- Te Puni Kōkiri's Whānau Ora Policy Team is responsible for policy mahi relating to Whānau Ora and wider social policy impacting whānau, hapū, and iwi

Te Puni Kōkiri is the government's principal policy advisor on Māori wellbeing and development. We achieve strategic influence with a focus on providing high quality policy advice and holding other agencies to account for delivering public services to, for, and with Māori. This includes our mandate to promote Māori achievement in education, training, health and economic resource development along with performing our monitoring and mentoring roles.
Based in Pōneke Wellington, our Policy Puni leads across the public sector to understand and prioritise issues, needs and opportunities impacting on Māori development and wellbeing. The Puni consists of 8 teams focusing on specific Policy areas.
Te whai wāhitanga | The opportunity
The Whānau Ora Policy Team focuses on developing policy and policy advice on social issues relating to whānau and hapu, and supporting enablers of whānau resilience, wellbeing and mana motuhake through the promotion of whānau-centred policy approaches and indigenous whānau ora practice, across government and in the community.
The team works with a wide range of agencies across a range of kaupapa, including Whānau Ora, kaupapa inquiries, the Crown Response to Abuse in Care Inquiry, health, and education.
Providing a high standard of advice to the Whānau Ora Policy Manager and other key stakeholders within Te Puni Kōkiri and across the wider public sector. You will help to shape and influence policy and will:
- Provide credible, evidence-based advice anchored in the context of iwi, hapu, whānau and Māori as it applies to Whānau Ora and other social policy issues.
- Conduct thorough and detailed analysis of complex policy issues to understand their implications and identify potential solutions.
- Work collaboratively with peers at Te Puni Kōkiri and with other government agencies including the Ministry for Business, Innovation & Employment, Ministry for Primary Industries etc.
- Apply and advise on te ao Māori and Te Tiriti based frameworks as they relate to policy.
- Provide advice and support to Senior and Executive Leadership teams, Ministers and key stakeholders.
- Uplift capability within the team through coaching and mentoring kaimahi, and promoting a culture of continuous feedback.
The likely appointment range for this role is between $104,056(90%) and $115,617 (100%) per annum. The full salary range of the grade is $104,056(90%) and $138,741 (120%)
Mōu | About you
An experienced policy professional, you will have previous experience in a government policy shop where te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi frameworks underpin your mahi. You will have:
- The mix of knowledge, skills, practices, and behaviours required by a modern policy practitioner to be able to deliver quality policy advice.
- Prior experience in a government policy making.
- Comfort working in an ao Māori environment and in situations where tikanga is observed.
- A level of competency in te reo Māori or the willingness to learn.
- An understanding of, and ability to prioritise, the flow of information and manage complex policy issues.
- Highly developed communication skills, especially written communication.
- Experience in building key stakeholder relationships and the ability to explain complex issues clearly to diverse audiences, including non-technical experts.
