Te Puni Kōkiri is the government's principal policy advisor on Māori wellbeing and development. We achieve strategic influence with a focus on providing high quality policy advice and holding other agencies to account for delivering public services to, for, and with Māori. This includes our mandate to promote Māori achievement in education, training, health and economic resource development along with performing our monitoring and mentoring roles. 

Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The opportunity

This is a great opportunity if you are seeking to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the inner workings of the Ministry. You will be joining a passionate team of 3x Portfolio Leads, 2x Advisors and the Manager, Statutory Entities & Appointments who are dedicated to contributing to the Ministry's success.

The Statutory Entities & Appointments team provides oversight and monitoring of Crown and Statutory Entities on behalf of the Minister for Māori Development. The team's work has a focus on performance and governance and is delivered through three portfolio workstreams: Appointments, Nominations and Secretariat services and Performance Monitoring.

Reporting to the Manager, Statutory Entities & Appointments, the Senior Advisors will work as part of the team across the three portfolio workstreams. This role will focus on:

  • Playing a key role in the Ministry's secretariat service functions
  • Take a lead on some workstream deliverables and support the Portfolio Leads on significant outputs
  • Supporting kaimahi with best practice governance activity and engagement.
  • Supporting the team with monitoring, contract management and reporting/ accountability associated with Māori Wardens as well as other entities

The likely appointment range for this role is $104,317 (90%) to $115,907 (100%).

  • Proven ability to work with senior leadership.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Proven experience managing complex and multiple relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Problem solving and analysis - Be able to demonstrate problem-solving capabilities for technical and user issues.
  • An analytical thinker who can make the connections between various aspects of the organisation and implications for your business unit.
  • Can adapt to quickly changing circumstances, operate within ambiguity, and act decisively.
  • Can-do attitude and a high level of initiative, sound judgement and discretion.
  • A strong understanding of accountability frameworks and the importance of effective governance.
  • Understand the machinery of government and government processes.
  • Ability to identify, build and actively manage significant relationships, valuing diverse perspectives and experiences.
  • The ability to work in collaboration with peers and to influence key stakeholders.
  • Understanding the relevance of the Treaty of Waitangi and Te Tiriti o Waitangi to the work being undertaken.
  • A high level of personal integrity and courage.
