The purpose of this role is to work collaboratively with the Harbourmaster and Deputy Harbourmaster to ensure maritime safety on Lake Taupō. The Navigational Safety Officer carries out maintenance of Crown-owned boating facilities and various reserves and public places in the Lake Taupō area.
The Harbourmaster Office is a 24/7 operation and has significant interaction with the community. This role engages daily with the community, providing advice, information, and public confidence in the work we do.
In this role you will be required to:
- Promote, educate, and enforce compliance with navigational safety bylaws, maritime rules, and Lake Taupō regulations
- Engage with the public in our local community and region to increase awareness of the Harbourmaster role
- Complete audit and maintenance regimes for berths, navigational aids, ramps, and jetties, ensuring identified risk areas are escalated to management
What will you bring specifically to be successful in this role?
- Proven experience in regular interactions with the public
- Strong knowledge of maritime legislation, rules, and regulations
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Negotiation and mediation skills with the ability to successfully resolve conflict
- Strong experience in conflict resolution/management
- Highly developed problem-solving skills
- Excellent judgement and decision-making skills
Other requirements:
- Skippers Restricted Limits Certificate
- No criminal record/ qualify under the 'Clean Slate Legislation 2004'
- Current Workplace First Aid qualification
- Availability during the peak season and some weekends
