Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role

Do you enjoy helping people find what they need? Do you love working with information sources - books, maps, photos, websites, letters, manuscripts, databases and more? Are you comfortable explaining and describing processes and helping people find and use library collections, resources, and technology?

The National Library Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa and Archives Te Rua Mahara o te Kawanatanga has an opportunity for a casual Librarian role in the Research Services Team.

In this role you will be working across teams in the Library & Archives on the following activities:

  • Welcoming and supporting a diverse range of researchers and visitors to the Library & Archives
  • Responding to research enquiries in the Library & Archives Reading Rooms
  • Other research-related tasks as required (e.g. responding written enquiries, supporting copy requests).

The role is a casual position, with varying levels work available from week to week, so would suit someone with a lot of flexibility. In most case we will be able to indicate at least two weeks in advance when work is available.

Mōu - About You

  • Experience working directly with the public in a library or research environment is very important: a year or more would be the expectation.
  • A tertiary degree. A focus on Aotearoa and/or Pasifika culture and/or history are desirable.
  • A library and/or archives qualification, or current study towards one; or equivalent in museum studies, or related field.

Applicants who lack the required experience or qualifications may still be considered, but you will need to demonstrate a strong combination of related experience, training and motivation that would enable you to succeed in the role.

If that sounds like you - we'd love to hear from you.

Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team

The role sits within the National Library & Archives' Wellington-based Research Services team. This is a team of 25 and the role reports to one of two Research Services Team Leaders. Both the team and the wider Library have a strong kaupapa of professionalism, manaakitanga, equity, and learning.
