The purpose of this role is to lead the strategic and operational direction of Police’s data and analytics capability.  The Manager – Data, Engineering and Science leads a team building Police’s data and analytics capability to realise the potential that Police’s data holdings offer for Police, our partners and the public.

 

This is a pivotal leadership role where you’ll guide and execute our data strategy and help build a world-class analytics culture.

 

You’ll bring together your leadership and technical skills across data strategy, architecture, engineering and analysis.  You’ll communicate clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

 

You’ll lead to implement strategy, drive governance, and ensure our platforms and data capabilities supports our vision of making New Zealand the safest country.

 

 

Key Accountabilities: 

 

  • Maintaining and building Police’s data assets, and contribute to improving data and analytics culture and maturity
  • Lead the technical design and delivery of Police’s data systems and assets to ensure alignment with organisational goals
  • Providing technical mentorship and hands-on support to engineers and analysts, uplifting capability and fostering innovation
  • Provide strategic advice and thought leadership on data
  • Provide expert advice on Police data holdings
  • Lead Police’s contribution to the Official Statistics System and oversee Police’s participation in cross-government collaboration and work with partner agencies (notably, Statistics New Zealand and the Ministry of Justice).

  • Experience leading data and analytics for a large and complex organisation.
  • Advanced data engineering and analysis skills and a deep understanding of data science methodologies
  • Experience with working with large and complex datasets
  • Tackling challenging problems using advanced analytical and statistical approaches
  • Strong leadership and communication abilities 
  • Leadership necessary to grow a team into a mature data and analytics function
  • A track record of implementing a data and analytics strategy, business intelligence strategy, or equivalent. 
  • Know how to drive change in fast moving, complex environments with multiple competing priorities  
  • The ability to lift and champion data and analytics maturity
  • Experience in leading technical teams, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration
  • Ability to plan and prioritise for strategic capability development
  • Have proven experience and ability to understand (or gain understanding) of Police data and tools, perhaps with a background in administrative data

This role is set at Leader/Manager level, this means your key purpose is “to lead tactics for Our Business and enable people to deliver them”. 

 

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and/or extensive experience and established credibility in data and/or business intelligence roles, i.e. 5+ years in a Senior role.
  • Considerable experience in delivering BI/DW/Analytics solutions.

Utu ā-tau | Salary

This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $168,527 - $174,144 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
