About the Role
We are ideally looking for a New Zealand Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist, with current or recent Medical Microbiology experience to join our microbiology team, however applications from trainee scientists may be considered and full training will be provided.
This role includes working in the routine microbiology laboratory as well as future opportunities in
infectious molecular diagnostics, TB and Mycology.
About the Team/Service/ Location
You will be working within our team, collaborating with medical, scientific, technical, and administrative staff to provide an excellent service to our community. You will be challenged due to the number, complexity and variety of samples and clinical presentations. We will support you with in-house on-the-job learning and mentorship to grow and develop. We also provide internal and external opportunities for continuing professional development.
Our laboratory is well-equipped with the latest microbiological technology including a variety of molecular platforms.
The Microbiology department is situated on-site at the Middlemore campus and provides a 24-hour service for Middlemore and Kidz First Hospitals and the Manukau Health Park. Here at Counties Manukau, we serve a population with complex health needs as well as providing national and regional services, e.g the National Burns Unit, plastic surgery, and spinal rehabilitation. Middlemore Hospital has one of the busiest emergency department and birthing units in NZ.
The Microbiology department is involved in teaching technical and medical staff and has close links with the Infection Prevention & Control service and Infectious Diseases department.

About you
To be successful in this role you will ideally have:

Full or Provisional Registration MLS, with the Medical Science Council of NZ
- A minimum of 2-years’ experience in a diagnostic medical microbiology laboratory
- Current Annual Practising Certificate
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Organised and efficient with effective time management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
