National Director – Business and Governance Services
Our Business and Governance Services group plays a critical role in ensuring the organisation's core operations run smoothly, efficiently, and with strategic foresight. We're looking for a highly experienced and astute leader to step into the role of National Director, Business and Governance Services – someone who can provide bold and clear leadership, act as the Chief Executive's trusted advisor, and ensure that delivery aligns with our strategic direction and the expectations of Ministers.
The National Director is responsible for overseeing and integrating a portfolio of functions that are essential to the smooth operation and governance of Health New Zealand. These include:
- Communications & Engagement
- Legal
- Government Services
- Assurance, Audit & Risk
- Office of the Chief Executive
This role ensures seamless coordination across business units, timely delivery of outputs, and a proactive approach to identifying and responding to issues that may impact the organisation. You'll act as the “eyes and ears” of the Chief Executive – providing early insights into risks, maintaining strong communication across stakeholders, and ensuring there are no surprises.
With a deep understanding of the public sector landscape and an eye on sector, legal, legislative, and economic factors, you'll help guide our strategic direction while also ensuring high-quality, timely operational delivery. You'll be responsible for leading the effective operation of governance forums and Executive Leadership Team meetings, as well as overseeing the commissioning of reports, advice, and key communications.
Additionally, this role is accountable for delivery and reporting on the Health New Zealand Delivery Plan, the internal audit programme, and implementation of associated recommendations.

You are an experienced senior leader with a strong public sector background and proven ability to operate at the executive level. You'll be known for your strategic thinking, sharp judgement, and ability to navigate complex environments with confidence and clarity. You're also an excellent communicator who builds trusted relationships easily and understands the value of influence, collaboration, and transparency.
You'll bring a strong understanding of the machinery of government, and have experience working with Ministers, the Ministry of Health, the Treasury, the Public Service Commission, and other key stakeholders.
