Job Description

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

  • Permanent, full time
  • Work from where you are, however travel around the motu is required

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the Role

This role is part of our Executive Leadership Team. It is critical in ensuring we have strong relationships with hapori Māori and Iwi. Within the health sector, high trust relationships will be built with Iwi and Iwi Māori Partnership Boards, Māori health partners/providers and Māori community leaders.  This will ensure the voices and aspirations of Māori and their community leaders are reflected in our focus on improving Hauora Māori outcomes, delivering on the priorities of Health NZ and contributing towards the Government's Health Targets.

The operating model for the Hauora Māori Service takes a horizontal integration or ‘whariki' approach. This requires that the role works across the organisation and within the wider health system to ensure strong and appropriate linkages with and between related mahi.

About you

Bringing a wealth of cultural intelligence and deep experience grounded in Te Ao Māori, your leadership is shaped by a strong foundation in kaupapa Māori and a clear commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. A relevant graduate qualification or equivalent professional expertise underpins a proven track record of delivering results on a national scale.

Strategic design and implementation of organisation-wide initiatives that reflect kaupapa Māori values have been a hallmark of your work. These efforts have not only driven systemic change but also demonstrated a capacity to work authentically in partnership with whānau, hapū, and iwi — ensuring their voices are embedded in decision-making and delivery.

Stakeholder engagement is approached with discipline and authenticity, grounded in trust and mutual respect. Strong internal and external networks are maintained to drive alignment, accountability, and impact across complex environments.

Leadership of large, diverse teams through periods of significant change has resulted in measurable improvements. In politically nuanced, complex and system-wide contexts, your calm and clear-headed leadership fosters confidence and collective momentum.
