 We are Te Whatu Ora-Auckland. We are part of Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand, the overarching organisation for New Zealand’s national health service. We provide health and disability services to more than half a million people living in central Auckland, regional services for Northland and greater Auckland, and specialist national services for the whole of New Zealand. Our main sites are Auckland City Hospital, Greenlane Clinical Centre and Starship Children’s Hospital, located in central Auckland.

 About the Role

Starship Children’s Health (Auckland), the leading tertiary hospital for child health care in Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand), has an exciting opportunity for a permanent, 0.9 FTE Paediatric Intensivist/ Senior Medical Officer to join the PICU team commencing from February 2026.

 In this role, you will provide an excellent standard of clinical practice and expertise to the paediatric intensive care unit, Starship Child Health and the New Zealand referral base. You will actively participate in PICU and Starship clinical excellence, education and research activities. You will supervise intensive care trainees and trainees from other specialities who rotate through the PICU.

 About the Team/Service/ Location

Starship's Paediatric Intensive Care Unit is a busy 30 bedded high functioning unit which: 

  • Covers all clinical specialties (except burns) and provides both cardiac and general ICU care including ECMO, CVVH, HFOV
  • Supplies a medical team and co-ordinates road/rotary wing/fixed wing retrievals for children nationally and across the South Pacific Islands
  • Is the centre of excellence for all PICU based research

 Located in Auckland, New Zealand we are the only paediatric intensive care unit in the country which provides an opportunity to gain extensive experience in our nationwide paediatric retrieval service. In this role, you will work closely with a highly skilled and dedicated team of paediatric intensivists, registrars and nursing staff managing a wide range of acute conditions with multidisciplinary input.

 About you

To be successful, you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand and be registered, or eligible for such registration (Locum Tenens/Vocational Registration). Applicants must be eligible to work in New Zealand. Preference will be given to New Zealand Citizens and New Zealand residents as per the New Zealand employment requirements. However, we value international experience and overseas candidates are encouraged to apply.

  • Current NZ Practicing Certificate with Vocational Registration/Locum Tenens Registration in Paediatric Intensive Care
