Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We're looking for a railway systems specialist to join our team in the role of Principal Rail Safety Officer, to deliver effective regulatory management through monitoring the compliance of rail license holders and rail participants. You will carry out the full range of regulatory functions to ensure NZTA is effective in delivering its regulatory responsibilities.

As our key rail systems and operations expert, you will:

  • Provide expert advice and interpretation of rail systems and operations to support our investigators and safety assessors
  • Monitor compliance of rail licence holders and participants to ensure we meet our regulatory responsibilities
  • Help translate complex technical information into clear, actionable insights for non-technical colleagues and senior leaders
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders and contribute to a positive experience for all users of the land transport system

We are seeking to appoint at a salary between $131,659 to $175,545 commensurate to skills and experience.

To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and experience:

  • Extensive practical experience and knowledge of railway systems and operations
  • Significant regulatory compliance experience
  • Practitioner level understanding of human factors in a safety critical industry
  • Proven success in the building and maintenance of effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to lead and implement strategic initiatives designed to solve complex problems

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification or significant relevant experience in a railway operational environment; and
  • Tertiary qualification or significant relevant experience in a regulatory compliance role

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.
