He angitūtanga | About the role

You will play a vital role leading the local biodiversity work while also working closely with the Heritage and Visitor Team to manage and maintain numerous visitor sites in the Catlins area.

The position will be focussed on:

  • threatened species management – marine species, flora and fauna
  • threats work – weed control and fencing
  • maintaining visitor sites, amenity facilities, tracks, huts and bridges
  • building and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders and internal staff
  • leading team safety briefings and taking responsibility for your safety and the safety of your team mates every day.

This position balances field-based and office-based tasks.  You will work closely with Supervisors and Senior Rangers with the planning and delivery of projects. You will need to have strong communication, be organised, highly motivated and happy to work alone.  You will be required to work in challenging terrain in both front and back country locations.

 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • sound knowledge and experience in biodiversity conservation field delivery work
  • hands on practical skillset, ideally with maintenance, building/construction, or plumbing experience
  • a high level of physical fitness and experience in the backcountry, particularly in remote and rugged terrain
  • strong planning and organisational skills
  • experience using apps and computer-based systems
  • a strong health and safety focus
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a proven ability to produce quality written reports and communications
  • a valid driver's licence, ideally with the ability to drive a manual.

Desirable:

  • experience with working with community partners, landowners, business and volunteers
  • experience/ qualifications with chainsaws, scrub bars, 4WDS, LUVs, helicopters and/or boating
  • a valid Approved Handlers' and/or GROWSAFE certificates
  • a current First Aid certificate.

The salary range for this position is $60,314 to $75,603 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
