Mō te tūranga | About the role

This is an entry-level role within our team, with development opportunities supported by a succession plan designed to help support your progression toward a C band position.

You will be an integral member of the biodiversity team. The South Westland weed control programme is extensive, covering areas from Lake Ianthe in the north to Awarua Point in the south. Weed management is a major focus, and you'll use a variety of techniques, including biological control.

You may also assist with conservation law compliance, negotiate fencing agreements with local landowners, help manage aerial weed control contracts, and assist with animal pest management projects. The role includes issuing hunting permits for conservation land and, at times, working with or leading volunteer groups on weed and pest control tasks.

You'll need to be comfortable spending extended periods in the backcountry, often in remote and rugged terrain.

 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:

  • current full Class 1 driver's license
  • a strong interest in conservation and the natural environment
  • knowledge/ experience in weed and pest animal management (e.g., spraying, trapping)
  • good level of physical fitness and comfort working in rugged, remote backcountry conditions
  • experience with Microsoft Office, mobile applications and GIS
  • ability to stay overnight in the field when required
  • a strong health and safety focus
  • good communication skills and ability to work well in a team
  • good problem-solving and organisational skills.

Desirable:

  • skilled in small plant/equipment maintenance
  • experience engaging with iwi and tangata whenua and understanding of te Tiriti
  • current First Aid Certificate
  • Growsafe, Approved Handler Agrichemicals Certificate and/or Controlled Substances Licence (Pesticides)
  • 4WD and Light Utility Vehicle (LUV) experience.
