About the Role
A typical day for a renal dialysis nurse begins with reviewing patient charts and preparing the dialysis machines. Throughout the shift, nurses assess patient’s observations signs, administer dialysis treatment and monitor patient’s tolerance. They also provide emotional support, educate patients and their families on dialysis and self-care, and troubleshoot complications.
The role requires strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage complex patient needs and machine related issues. Dialysis nurses work closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive care and ensure optimal patient outcomes. You will also work independently, making decisions in a satellite setting, managing a variety of complex patients’ needs and troubleshooting challenges.
We work in collaboration in a multidisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive care. The role will have varied shifts and schedules. The unit will operate 6 days a week from 0600-1430, 1200-2030 and 1500-2330pm, to provide comprehensive and continuous care to patients.You will enjoy job satisfaction from delivering high-quality patient care by making a positive impact on patient’s lives and health outcomes.
About the Team/Service/ Location
Our team consists of 14 dialysis nurses and 3 peritoneal nurses, working collaboratively under the guidance of Waikato mentorship at Rotorua Hospital Nurse-Led Renal Unit within Medical Services.

About you
As a Renal Dialysis Nurse, it is preferred but not essential to have Renal/dialysis experience.
The successful candidate will have:
Experience:
- Renal/Dialysis Experience Fresenius 5008s/6008 Machines: Previous experience in a renal or dialysis setting is highly desirable.
- Critical Care Experience: Experience in critical care or acute setting can be beneficial.
Professional Requirements:
- Nursing Registration: Current nursing registration with New Zealand Nursing Council.
- Current Annual Practising Certificate
- Dialysis training completion or willingness to undergo training. (6-week education program can be provided on unit).
- Strong clinical skills, including assessment, medication administration, and technical skills related to dialysis.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with patients and families and health care teams.
- Problem solving with strong critical thinking to manage complex patient needs and dialysis-related issues.
- Team work, the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrate compassion and empathy in caring for patients with complex needs.
