Research Archivist | Archives & National Library - Department of Internal Affairs Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
Do you enjoy helping people find what they need? Do you love working with information sources -archives, maps, photos, websites, letters, manuscripts, databases and more? Are you comfortable explaining and describing processes and helping people find and use Archives and Library collections, resources, and technology?
Archives Te Rua Mahara o te Kawanatanga & The National Library Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa has an opportunity for a Research Archivist in the Research Services Team.
In this role you will be working across teams in the Archives & Library on the following activities:
- Welcoming and supporting a diverse range of researchers, government representatives and visitors to the Archives & Library
- Responding to research enquiries in person, via email & telephone
- Providing support and advice to government agencies in accessing records and information
- Participating in a culture of continuous learning and professional development
Mōu - About You
- Experience working directly with the public in an archives, library or research environment is very important: several years would be the expectation.
- A tertiary degree. A focus on historical research in Aotearoa New Zealand is desirable.
- An archives qualification, or current study towards an archives qualification or equivalent in library practice, museum studies, or related field is also desirable.
Applicants who lack the required experience or qualifications may still be considered, but you will need to demonstrate a strong combination of related experience, training and motivation that would enable you to succeed in the role.

Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team
The role sits within the Archives & National Library's Wellington-based Research Services team. This is a team of 25 and the role reports to one of two Research Services Team Leaders. Both the team and the wider organisation have a strong kaupapa of professionalism, manaakitanga, equity, and learning.

Wā Mahi Ngāwari - Flexible Working
This role involves working directly with researchers and collections on a daily basis, so the opportunities for remote working are limited, however we are open to considering other flexible working opportunities.
The Reading Rooms are open on Saturday mornings, so you will be asked to work onsite approximately one Saturday each month.
