He angitūtanga | About the role
Our team works nationally to achieve agreed biodiversity outcomes by using an evidence-based system view of biodiversity, implemented through partnership. We work closely with operational teams to develop well-integrated objectives for our biodiversity work at place, to deliver on national priorities. We undertake a large programme of science and provide advice critical in the translation of conservation strategy to management action.
You'll play a key role in:
- Developing and delivering research to fill critical knowledge gaps in how to effectively monitor and manage threatened invertebrates.
- Leading and supporting engagement with Operations to build effective management plans for threatened invertebrates.
- Providing integrated advice to help identify conservation research and management priorities.
- Identifying and facilitating improvements in biodiversity systems from threat classification to management and research planning.
- Contributing to updates of Biodiversity Standard Operating Procedures and Best Practice documents

We're looking for someone who excels at working with people to clarify problems and collaborate on solutions.
Key attributes for success in this role include:
- Highly proficient in the design, management and delivery of scientific research
- Expert knowledge of terrestrial invertebrate monitoring, ecology, and / or behaviour
- Flexibility to work across a wide range of invertebrate taxa and environment types
- Well-established understanding of species recovery and conservation strategies appropriate to the New Zealand context.
- Ability to identify issues, develop solutions, and provide evidence-based recommendations on a national scale.
- Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders to achieve conservation goals.
- Capable of offering strategic and practical biodiversity advice.
- Ability to adapt to new ways of working and to excel in a collaborative fast-paced environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report preparation.

Mō te tīma | About the team
DOC's Fauna Science Team is made up of scientists based across New Zealand, each leading and supporting research to improve the conservation management of Aotearoa's threatened terrestrial fauna. Our research fills critical knowledge gaps and translates results directly into species management to improve conservation outcomes for these species.

The salary range for this position is $79,656 – 100,639 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
