International shipping is vital for New Zealand as a trading nation. New Zealand has committed to an internationally consistent regulatory system for ships, joining international conventions covering safety, security and environmental protection. It is therefore essential that New Zealand is actively engaged in the development and maintenance of international regulation with a particular focus on the International Maritime Organization.

Mō tō mātou Rōpū | About the team 

 

We are looking for a self-starter with proven experience in leading or substantively contributing to policy or implementation projects in government and providing robust advice to decision makers and a range of audiences.  You will understand how regulatory systems work and how they can interface with others. We need a strong critical thinker who can influence inside Maritime NZ, across government and with our international stakeholders.  

Because we are an organization and sector where relationships matter, you will model our values of respect, integrity, and commitment. You will need to work well with internal and external stakeholders to promote an integrated approach to policy and regulatory development which best supports New Zealand's maritime interests. You will have a keen eye for analysing and evaluating current international issues and assessing the impact and priority for New Zealand.

Nōu te rourou | What you bring 

  • Relevant tertiary qualification e.g. public administration, politics, international relations, law, science;
  • Strong analytical abilities, including the ability to interpret data and handle complex and technical material;
  • Experience providing advice to wide range of audiences, to translate principles into action/application;
  • Experience contributing to, and taking the lead in, complex projects and programmes with multiple streams;
  • Successful track record as a proactive and innovative thinker;
  • Strong engagement and relationship skills, and ability to foster positive working relationships with a diverse range of people;
  • Proven success presenting to a range of different audiences and channels; highly effective written and oral communication skills;
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic and evolving environment;
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically.
