The main focus of this role is to provide expert clinical knowledge and experience that supports VA's work with veterans.

The main responsibilities of this role include:

  • Delivery of expert clinical expertise and advice in support of decision making and quality outcomes for Veterans.
  • Provide a ‘clinical lens' in support of decisions around treatment and rehabilitation.
  • Interpret complex clinical information and analyse client's medical histories/ records.
  • Provide advice to the Decisions Officers regarding claims and entitlements for veterans.
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the VA team to ensure that Veterans' Affairs' clinical advice, operations, and initiatives are consistent with statutory obligations.
  • Identify areas where policy, procedures or standards could be improved or developed.

We have two part-time (.5) fixed term positions ending 30 June 2026.

These positions are based in Wellington CBD, however, we would consider someone who would like to work remotely. We are reasonably flexible with working arrangements and would be open to discussing which days and hours work best for you.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience

You will be a highly competent and experienced medical practitioner, with at least 4 – 5 years' post graduate experience, in a relevant medical field including general practice, military medicine and / or as a Nurse Practitioner.

You will also have:

  • Proven ability to make effective recommendations and provide clinical expertise at a senior level.
  • Experience reviewing medical/rehabilitation reports and communicating this concisely to a mixed audience.
  • Experience in military medicine and/or military service.
  • Experience in primary health care and occupation assessment and treatment.
  • An understanding of mental health challenges and how to manage these effectively.
  • A relevant tertiary level qualification.

If you are the preferred candidate post interview, you will be required to provide certified copies of your medical credentials.  Some health roles require you to disclose your HBV, HCV and HIV status, to manage any risk of exposure. This will be requested for specific roles post interview.

To be eligible for the required level of government security clearance with the NZ Defence Force, you need to meet certain citizenship and residency criteria. Here's what you need to know:

Low Level Security Clearance

  • You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
  • At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last five (5) years.
  • You must have a five (5) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
