We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Analyst to join our Market Regulation branch on a 9-month fixed-term position, based in either our Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) office or Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) office. This is a busy, varied role where you will have the chance to share your knowledge, influence decisions around data collection and support the Commission's journey to become an insight-driven organisation.
Reporting to our Branch Services Manager, you'll develop and share data analytics practices to manage and improve the integrity and usefulness of the branch's data. You will also contribute to the development of the branch data strategy and data and analytics foundational initiatives consistent with the expectations of the Chief Data Officer and the Commission's Data Governance model.
The Commission's Market Regulation branch is responsible for market and economic regulation functions in the Telecommunications, Grocery, Retail Payments, Fuel and Dairy markets. This directly contributes to the Commission's vision that New Zealanders are better off because markets work well and consumers and businesses are confident market participants.
Working closely with the teams in our Market Regulation branch you will document and classify our data assets to increase transparency and availability for the Commission and work closely with our Information Services team to enhance our current systems for data collection and access.
The indicative salary range for this role is $112,970 - $132,906 plus 3% KiwiSaver employer contribution. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects their individual skills, experience, and internal relativities across the organisation.

If you have the following skills and attributes, you could make a great Senior Data Analyst:
- Agile/Kanban project delivery – Proven ability to plan and execute data initiatives within iterative frameworks.
- Python, R & SQL – Strong data wrangling, analysis, and transformation skills, including working with diverse data sources.
- Data pipelines & cloud – Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines on Azure or Snowflake, with dbt for transformations and tools like Docker, Airflow, or Azure Data Factory for orchestration.
- Data modelling & warehousing – Solid grasp of relational/non-relational databases, data lakes, and performance optimization.
- CI/CD & version control – Familiarity with Git/Azure DevOps, automated testing, and deployment strategies for robust data workflows.
- Data storytelling & visualization – Ability to create compelling dashboards (Power BI, Streamlit, ggplot) that drive informed decision-making.
