Job Description

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

About us

The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko is an independent Crown entity that regulates the electricity market. We are a kaitiaki of electricity, and our purpose is to enhance New Zealanders' lives, prosperity, and environment through electricity.

The electricity industry is at a pivotal moment, with the journey towards renewable energy sources and innovation reshaping how we operate. To meet these challenges and opportunities, we're evolving as an organisation - growing our capabilities, expanding our reach, and building a team ready to create a brighter, more sustainable future for Aotearoa. Our focus is on making a difference through bold thinking, collaboration, and delivering value for the communities we serve.

About the role

We're looking for a Senior Investigator to join our Compliance Operations team, part of the Legal, Monitoring and Compliance group. You'll help monitor, investigate and enforce compliance with the Electricity Industry Participation Code, the Electricity Industry Act, and regulations.

The role involves working closely with others across the sector to encourage compliance and reduce breaches. You'll look into a wide range of issues, including market operation, grid assets, audits and undesirable trading situations and contribute to improving how the electricity market works for Aotearoa.

If you're not quite at senior level but bring strong foundations and the motivation to grow, we'd still like to hear from you.

This is a fixed-term position to cover maternity leave until Friday, 10 July 2026.

Our ideal candidate

You'll have a sound working knowledge of the electricity industry within New Zealand and have experience investigating complex issues and the confidence to analyse and explain financial, legal or regulatory matters clearly. You'll be a strong communicator who can express ideas clearly in writing and in conversation, and someone who builds trust and maintains positive working relationships - even when views differ.

You'll need to manage your time well, work independently, and be adaptable. Knowledge of the electricity sector or experience in regulatory compliance would be helpful, but just as important is your curiosity, sound judgement and commitment to learning.

Why work with us?

Electricity plays a critical role in the quality of our lives and businesses. As an electricity kaitiaki our work is diverse, intellectually challenging and contributes to our communities, economy, environment, and the nation as a whole. We are a small but high-impact organisation where talented individuals can make a real difference. We foster an open, collaborative environment that encourages quality, innovation, ongoing learning, and knowledge sharing.

We support a healthy work-life balance and offer a range of benefits to support our teams.

This includes the following:

  • Competitive remuneration from $130,000 on your skills and experience, plus a 3% net KiwiSaver contribution
  • Flexible working options
  • Health, wellbeing, and social initiatives, including allowances, Habit Health+ EAP services for you and your whānau, and regular team events
