About the role - Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga
We have an opportunity for a dedicated and motivated experienced educator to teach computer science in the tropical island of Hainan, as part of an agreement where we are offering the University of Waikato Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the campus of the University of Hainan in China.
We are looking for a dynamic individual who will bring professional and academic experience to be part of a team dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and postgraduate supervision. You will have the skills and experience to provide leadership and innovation in teaching computer science to students in areas such as artificial intelligence and deep learning, algorithms and data structures, and software development.
Along with teaching, your work will help to advance research in human-centred artificial intelligence, and you will help to develop strategic cross-and inter-disciplinary research initiatives in artificial intelligence. Part of the role will also be to contribute to outreach and engage with schools and other communities.
For more information on this role please see the position description. The salary range for this full-time, permanent position will be in the range of CNY460,000 to CNY550,000 per year dependent on qualifications, skills, and experience.
Who are you? - Ko wai koe?
You will have a PhD qualification in computer science and demonstrated experience teaching to large and small groups of students. It is essential that you have teaching experience in computer science and artificial intelligence.
As a member of our small team in Hainan, you will work jointly with your team members, as well as researchers at the University of Hainan and colleagues at the main campus of the University of Waikato in New Zealand, to advance applications of artificial intelligence and deep learning in human-centred computing domains.
You will have expertise in designing and implementing artificial intelligence and deep learning systems for real-world human challenges (e.g., mental health, education, assistive technology, and accessibility) and have a strong interest in ethical design, the study of human-AI interaction, and the use of immersive technologies for social impact.
Ideally, you will have experience living and working in Asia, and the ability to work with students for whom English is not their first language. Teaching will be conducted in the English language.

The University of Waikato has an agreement with Hainan University (HNU), a key university in the eponymous island province, to deliver a joint programme yielding a University of Waikato Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree. At the completion of the programme, students will also receive a bachelor's degree from HNU.
