He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council's Ngā Ratonga Ture (Legal Services) department has an opportunity for a permanent full-time Senior Legal Counsel working in the corporate commercial area. This role will report directly to Associate General Counsel (Commercial) and will be based in the CBD.
Friendly team, great clients, interesting work! We deliver high-quality legal services to the Council whānau. Our in-house lawyers support an incredibly wide range of Council-related activities.
On any one day, we can work on projects touching on:
• Council services and operations
• Partnerships with Government and the private sector
• Procurement and ICT agreements
• Infrastructure delivery and management
• Major projects and investments
We drive value and results for Aucklanders through good negotiation, contract management, efficient use of assets. We also support corporate and finance functions, including capital raising, company law issues, and compliance.
He kōrero mōu: About you
We are looking for someone with 6 to 12 years PQE who wants to be a great operator with sound commercial legal instincts and who likes results. You will have strong attention to detail, be organised in managing your work, and have a collaborative working style with team members, clients, and our external law firm providers. In-house and local authority experience is welcomed, but not required.
You will have the ability to deliver well-articulated, technically robust legal advice. To be successful in this role you will be solution focused; working to manage risk within the organisation.
This is an opportunity to utilise your interpersonal and relationship building skills while working across a large and varied portfolio. This role will see you work independently and as part of a high-performing team.
We will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:
• A tertiary qualification in law and a current NZ practising certificate.
• At least six years experience in legal practice (in-house or in private practice).

Ngā Ratonga Ture (Legal Services) is a large in-house team of over 50 lawyers organised into five teams. The Commercial Team is one of those five teams and has about 10 lawyers.
