At the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) | Te Tira Tiaki, our mission is to protect and enhance Aotearoa New Zealand's security and wellbeing. We provide Signals Intelligence and Cyber Security and resilience to organisations of national significance to successfully navigate in an unpredictable world.

The GCSB's Technology Directorate are looking for someone to join our team of Network Engineers. This opportunity is available to anyone who is looking to be based in Auckland, Wellington or Blenheim, and will see you engaging regularly with key domestic and international stakeholders.

About the role:

As a Network Engineer in our team, you will design, implement and support the organisation's large domestic and international multi service networks. Your day-to-day may also see you working on a combination of the below:

  • Troubleshooting
  • Implementation of new networks
  • Working with the architects on the full lifecycle from planning through design, testing, deployment and operation
  • Maintaining and optimising operational networks

We are looking for a senior level engineer and have supplied the positions description for a level 3 Network Engineer as reference. As a senior engineer in the team, you will be recognised a subject matter expert and assist in mentoring more junior members of the team. 

What are we looking for from you?

You will be a team player, who enjoys collaborative working in an open plan environment. This role will require you to be a confident communicator, as well as have strong problem-solving skills, as you will regularly engage with teams and partners to discuss requirements and provide solutions. We are also looking for you to have:

  • Solid networking fundamentals
  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Routing and switching experience
  • Network monitoring and management practices
  • Understanding of modern security practices

It would also be useful if you have experience with:

  • Modern service provider and data centre networking, including MPLS and EVPN.
  • Experience working with service providers domestically and internationally
  • Developing solutions for high risk environments
  • High Assurance Cryptographic capabilities
  • Modern compute, container, IaaS, PaaS platforms
  • Identifying, diagnosing and resolving network issues using a range of tools (debugging, logs PCAPs etc) to support this
  • Network Automation

The expected appointing range for this position 

Before you apply

Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.

You must:

  • Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years

OR

Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years

  • Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance
    • Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
