About the role

Are you passionate about the future of medicine and contributing to innovative clinical trials? Join our team as a Clinical Trials Pharmacist, where you will play a pivotal role in this area of pharmacy practice. You will play a key role in the planning, coordination, and supply of clinical trial medicines across different therapeutic areas.

Working alongside our Senior Pharmacist for Clinical Trials & Research and two pharmacy technicians, you will be immersed in all pharmacy aspects of clinical trial management. From the supply and handling of trial medications to completion of trial documentation and assisting with trial set-ups, you will be at the centre of delivering our clinical trial services. Put your communication and organisation skills to use as you collaborate with our pharmacy compounding unit, hospital clinical trial teams, and external research partners to ensure the seamless execution of trials.

You will gain valuable insight into key elements of clinical trials, including blinding, randomisation, and data collection, building a strong foundation in clinical research. As part of the Quality and Safe Use of Medicines (QSUM) team, there is also an option to contribute to other work, further enhancing your skills and impact within the organisation.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Dispense and check clinical trial medicines
  • Implement clinical trial processes and procedures
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation
  • Trial set-up
  • Liaise with the pharmacy’s compounding unit team, Health New Zealand Waikato clinical trial coordinators and external clinical research associates
  • Work with the trials team on service and quality improvement
  • Support other staff with audits or research

The salary for this position will be based on experience and in line with the Allied, Public Health, Scientific and Technical Collective agreement. Additional benefits include kiwisaver contributions (if eligible), shift allowances, professional development and wellness support.

About the Team/Service

Pharmacy Services at Waikato Hospital provides services to the hospital and to six smaller rural hospitals and care units across the Waikato region. The pharmacy service is divided into five services: Clinical Services, Dispensary and Supply, Oncology, Haematology and Compounding Service, Quality and Safe Use of Medicines (QSUM) and our onsite community pharmacy service (Pharmacy on Meade).

You will be a member of the QSUM team, but as part of the wider pharmacy team you will also interact and work with pharmacy staff in the other teams. As a member of the wider pharmacy team, you will contribute to the in-patient dispensary as needed, with occasional involvement in weekend rosters.


About you

Skills and experience you’ll need to be considered for the role:

  • A current annual practising certificate with the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand.
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
  • Good time management and prioritisation
  • Able to work effectively independently and in a team
  • Clinical Trials experience is advantageous
