The Policy Group at the Department of Internal Affairs is looking for talented senior policy analysts to join our team. Here, you'll have the opportunity to lead work on a diverse range of impactful projects and develop your policy expertise in a supportive environment.

Why Join Us?

At the Department of Internal Affairs, we invest in the growth and development of our people. Our Policy Analysts are at the forefront of creating innovative solutions for some of New Zealand's most pressing issues. Here are some of the exciting projects you could be working on:

  • Digital and Identity: Developing regulations for the Digital Identity Services Trust Framework and ensuring our identity products are fit for purpose. This work will unlock the future of digital authentication for the products and services New Zealanders consume.
  • Community Wellbeing: Volunteering and community-led development are at the heart of New Zealand's culture. Craft policies that foster a strong and vibrant community and voluntary sector.
  • Gambling and Racing: Modernising gambling regulation for today's digital world, including strategies to minimise harm across the gambling system.
  • Online Safety and Classification: Updating consumer information systems for movies, shows, and video games to help manage the risk of harm from online and traditional media content.
  • Racing and Betting: Advising and legislating the closure of the greyhound racing industry and ensuring the sustainability of horse racing in New Zealand.

What You'll Do

Our senior policy analysts get to lead policy advice processes supported by principals and managers. As a senior policy analyst in the Department, you will conduct thorough research, perform detailed analyses, and actively engage with stakeholders to prepare evidence-based advice for ministers and senior leaders in the public service. You will share your knowledge with more junior team members by mentoring and supporting policy analysts to produce quality work. This role provides a fantastic opportunity to enhance your skills and make a meaningful impact on New Zealand's policy landscape.

What We're Looking For

  • You are already a senior policy analyst or have 3+ years' experience as a policy analyst, with the necessary experience to step up to a senior role.
  • A relevant degree demonstrating your critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal.
  • Strong knowledge of legislative processes and the structure of New Zealand's government.
  • A curious mindset motivated by problem-solving and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Experience leading and supporting analysts to produce quality work.
  • Comfort in leading engagement with communities, industry, and international stakeholders.
