He angitūtanga | About the role

Are you a regulatory professional, keen to make a difference to Aotearoa's conservation? Join our Statutory Processing team!

As a Senior Statutory Advisor, you'll provide the subject matter expertise, tactical oversight, improvements, and support for conservation statutory application processes.   Our team manages the entry of work into DOC's permitting system, which includes; pre-application triage, risk assessment, prioritising and determining processing pathway for permits or concession applications for a variety of activities that we regulate or authorise throughout Aotearoa.

The position will be focussed on:

  • Leading the continuous improvement of our processing systems and statutory application process
  • Using legislation and policy to assess risks and support applications
  • Provide high-quality technical advice to stakeholders regarding regulation
  • Drafting Ministerial correspondence to OIA requests

Our mahi involves applications and issues including; land tenure, Treaty obligations, flora and fauna, scientific research, protected species, commercial activity, Hollywood blockbuster filming applications, adventure sport and activities, and aircraft landings.......just to name a few! This means there's opportunity to interact with other parts of the business; you could be chatting to a ranger on Stewart Island in the morning and Auckland Zoo about saving a washed-up penguin in the afternoon.

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Experienced in applying policy, statutory processes and legislation to critically assess risk, complexity and priority
  • Ability to interpret information and provide technical advice to applicants and stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills, able to lead meetings and draft formal correspondence including Ministerial requests, OIA's or similar
  • Continuous-improvement mentality, always seeking way to improve systems and processes
  • Team player within a collaborative team environment, with experience mentoring and developing others and confident with managing relationships with a variety of stakeholders

Adept at managing a busy workload and keeping everything on track to meet deadlines

The salary range for this position is $79,656 - $100,639 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.


Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
