About the Role
As a Specialist Anaesthetist, you - ll play a key role in our Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia team, contributing to acute and elective care across a wide variety of surgical specialities, including Cardiothoracic, Vascular, Neurosurgery, Trauma, Paediatric/Neonatal surgery, and more. This position includes participation in an out-of-hours cardiac on-call roster.
This fixed term role is offered full time, comprising 28 half-day clinical sessions over a 4-week cycle, plus non-clinical and on-call responsibilities.
You will bring a broad range of clinical anaesthesia expertise (excluding Obstetrics), with a strong focus on Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia. Post-fellowship experience of at least 12 months in this subspecialty is essential.
About the Team / Service / Location
The Department of Anaesthesia at Christchurch Hospital is a large, ANZCA-accredited training department with an established team of highly experienced specialists and trainees. We provide anaesthetic services across Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals, servicing an immediate population of 350,000 and acting as a tertiary referral centre for the South Island.
Cardiac Surgical Services in Christchurch include the full spectrum of adult operative and interventional procedures, excluding transplant surgery.

About You
As a Specialist Anaesthetist, you will have:
- A minimum of 12 months post-fellowship experience in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia
- Eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Proven ability to work in a high-acuity, tertiary-level surgical environment
- Commitment to collaborative, multidisciplinary teamwork
- A strong focus on equity, safety, and quality in patient care
