At the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) | Te Tira Tiaki, our mission is to protect and enhance Aotearoa New Zealand's security and wellbeing. We provide Signals Intelligence and Cyber Security and resilience to organisations of national significance to successfully navigate in an unpredictable world.

The GCSB's Technology & Data directorate are looking for System Engineers to join us and contribute their skills to our engineering teams.

Whether you are a junior engineer with only a few years' experience, looking for an organisation to foster your development, or a senior engineer with plenty of design experience, we are interested in your application!

The role:

As a system engineer you will design, implement and support system of some of the NZIC's most important platforms and services across our Enterprise. This opportunity could see you engaging regularly with key domestic and international stakeholders. Within our teams you could be supporting anything from Exchange, Active Directory, our container platform, M365 and many systems in between.

These roles can be based in Wellington, Auckland or Blenheim.

What we are looking for:

You will be a team player, who enjoys collaborative working in an open plan environment. This role will require you to be a confident communicator, as well as have strong problem solving skills, as you will regularly engage with teams and partners to discuss requirements and provide solutions. We are also looking for you to have experience in:

  • Microsoft Azure
  • M365 and Teams Management
  • Powershell and Python
  • Windows and Linux system administration
  • Troubleshooting

It would also be beneficial if you have used, or are familiar with:

  • Automation tools e.g. Ansible or Terraform
  • Patching and patch management
  • Kubernetes
  • Monitoring and management
  • Understanding of modern security practices

While our teams have their specific focuses, we work collaboratively on a variety of projects and initiatives, so the ideal candidate will be adaptable and comfortable working with different technologies.  

Before you apply

Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.

You must:

  • Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years

OR

Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years

  • Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance
    • Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
